Rabbi, Catholic welder team up to create 25-foot menorah

Posted by briank | Naples, Shopping Centers, SWFL News, Village on Venetian Bay | Posted on December 14th, 2009

Chabad Jewish Center of Naples is taking Hanukkah to new heights.

Specifically, 25 feet in the air. That’s the height of a menorah the group is working to erect for Chabad’s Hanukkah extravaganza, to be held Sunday at the Village on Venetian Bay.

The menorah symbolizes a miracle of ancient Judaism, when celebrants were rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century B.C. The Jews had only enough oil to light the flame for one night, but it nevertheless kept burning for eight.

Bonita Bay residents strike a tentative deal to buy their golf club

Posted by briank | Bonita Bay, Bonita Springs, SWFL News | Posted on December 10th, 2009

Bonita Springs — Members of the Bonita Bay Club have swung into action.

They’ve struck a tentative agreement to purchase their golf club for $12 million, with $11.5 million coming from members of the new club.

Under the proposed agreement announced Monday, the developer, Bonita Bay Group, would pay the new club $500,000 for the exclusive right to market tee times at the Bonita East courses off Immokalee Road to nonmembers for three years, beginning May 1, according to the community Web site BayWatchNews.com.

The deal must still be approved by Bonita Bay Group’s lenders and by a majority of the club’s membership. It could fall through if at least 85 percent of the current golf members don’t join the new club.

The agreement was negotiated by Bonita Bay’s Turnover Committee after months of wrangling. The announcement came a few days after Bonita Bay Group sold its beach and golf clubs to members at Mediterra for $6.8 million.

Bonita Bay Turnover Committee member Cynthia White described the tentative deal as “fair and in our members’ best interests.”

“We’ve come to an agreement,” she said. “But there is still a lot of work to do.”

“At this point, our goal is to try to get it done as soon as possible,” White said.

The committee will be reaching out to members in the coming weeks to seek approval, she said.

“This is just the beginning of the process,” White said.

The sale would include 90 holes of championship golf, including three courses in the community and two nearby, two clubhouses, three practice ranges, 18 tennis courts, a swim center and a fitness center.

Neighborhood news: Old Naples a community with many amenities close by

Posted by briank | Naples, Premier Sotheby's International Realty, Premier Sotheby's International Realty Agents, Real Estate, Real Estate Market, SWFL News | Posted on December 2nd, 2009

My name is Karen Coney Coplin. I live in Old Naples and have called Naples home since 1994.

When I moved here, Naples was a much smaller community, with a real “small-town” feel. This was especially true in Old Naples and I was fortunate enough to move there in 1996.

Old Naples is a community loosely bounded by the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club and South Golf Drive to the north, and varying portions of avenues numbered 14th Avenue South to 20th Avenue South to the south. The Gulf of Mexico is at the end of every avenue to the west, and U.S. 41, or Ninth Street, is the eastern boundary.

For newer residents, it can be helpful to remember Central Avenue was at one time the center of town. So each of the avenues and streets south of Central have “S” at the end; those to the north have an “N.”

Avenues run east–west to the beach; streets, north–south.

When you see other designations, like Bougainvillea Road, or Palm Circle (E and W) it’s a clue that it is not a linear street and one which winds around, often near a lake or park.

Upstate New York was home for the first half of my life. After growing up in Binghamton, then schooled in Oswego and Ithaca, I knew I needed more sunshine.

I graduated from Cornell Law School and practiced real estate law in Palm Beach County before heading to Naples to do the same until 2000.

In 1999, my first of two daughters, Tabitha, was born and I decided to explore a new career in real estate sales. The arrival of Phoebe in 2003 reaffirmed that my Realtor career was far more flexible and rewarding.

Both of my daughters have grown up in Old Naples with the beach just footsteps away and a variety of places to bike, walk and play, with parks and other recreational activities in many locations.
